Would basic stick welding work on aluminum?

I don't have any of that expensive MIG or TIG equipment. All I have is a basic stick that I wanna use for simple jobs. Plus, it's quite handy for small fixes like brackets and holders, right? Very quick to work with as well. Since I'm doing DIY and it's not really a contract job or a business or something, I want to ask if basic stick welding would work on aluminum. Would it? I don't still need shielding gas, right?

I wouldn't call it impossible, but it's not the best technique. A mig welder with an aluminum spoon will do a much better job
