what is it with dual shield welding

My bro was talking about dual shield welding yesterday, which has me scratching my head. Idk why we need it

so, if we're using gas with dual shield, it seems like we'd still have that whole "wind blowing the gas away" thing, just like regular MIG.

Dual shield still has some slag to clean up, even if it's not as much as with flux core.

if you're welding where the wind isn't a pain, what's the big deal with dual shield over just plain old MIG? It feels like it should be simpler with regular MIG indoors, right?

Plus, isn't that dual shield wire pricier, and then you've got the gas cost on top of that?

Lastly, it seems like if you're ditching stick welding, flux core is the only way to go when you're dealing with wind outside.

Where am I totally missing the point with all this? It just doesn't seem to add up!
 
Dual shield's pretty cool! it welds in any position, better than regular MIG if i may say so. it digs deeper, and is cleaner than self sshielded flux core.

it lays down a lot of metal fast, so it's great for big steel jobs.
 
I'm a bit concerned about the cost between the dual shield wire and gas, it can add up fast. Is the improved weld quality really worth the extra expense?

Yeah dual shield is pricier and the gas adds up to the cost... But if what you're targeting is a clean and strong weld, then this is an investment that will eventually pay off.
 
Absolutely! The dual shield might hit your wallet a bit harder at the start, but those clean welds, the strength of the bond, and way less cleanup later on really pay off in the end. Are you using .035 or .045 wire?
 
My brother had his fair share of confusion about dual shield when he first got into welding. Sure, it's a bit pricier at the beginning because of the gas and wire costs, but the benefits are clear. You get cleaner welds and stronger joints, which really help minimize the amount of cleanup and rework you have to do later. If you're looking for reliable results, especially for structural jobs, it's definitely an investment worth making, even if you're working indoors where wind isn't a factor.
