i'm confused why sometimes they're smooth but sometimes they're filled with holes! is it possible that i'm getting it too hot even with a lower setting?
any suggestions will be a great help!

Could be heat or your technique, even on a lower setting if you linger too long or your travel speed is off, you can still get too hot and cause porosity, also do well to check your gas coverage too, coz sometimes it's just a shielding issue. What are you welding?

I completely agree with @the real mvp he da real MVP for saying that. As for me I just want to add just clean your metal, make it squeaky clean. If there are tiny dots tiny dirt, you can get holes too, not just because of the heat and the speed.
