How to weld on vertical panels effectively

My bro is trying to improve his MIG welding skills, practicing on some thin metal sheets. Got a bunch of work coming up on a Mini, and I want the welds to look good and hold up strong.

His flat welds (horizontal) are starting to look pretty decent now. They're neater, and the weld seems to be sinking in just the right amount. He’s slowing down the wire and holding the gun closer to what he’s welding, and it works!.

But he got a fair bit of welding to do on vertical panels. He’s running the weld bead across and up and down, and have been a total mess! I’m not expert, so I’m not sure about giving him advice.

When he’s welding across a vertical piece, he points the welding gun upward a little bit.

He was asking will it work if he start at the top and work the way down, or start at the bottom and go up?
Does anyone have any tips or tricks for welding on vertical stuff? Any advice would be awesome!

Hey there! For welding, go from bottom to top as it is easier. for the gun angle, he may need to point it slightly upward when going from bottom to top. Hpe this helps! good luck to your bro

Go bottom up for better control and use short stitch welds, let it cool between, a slight upward gun angle will help but please avoid top-down, it's weak.

Looks like your brother is doing well with those flat welds! For vertical welding, he should go from top to bottom. It's great for thin metal because it keeps the heat down and prevents burn-through. Tell him to hold the gun at a slight angle down and try doin a tight zig-zag or small circles. A littel practice on some scrap metal, and he'll get the hang of it
