I took a stab in the dark at stick welding aluminum with a regular arc welder, just to see if he could fix simple stuff for around ten bucks, a real bang for your buck move if you ask me! I wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel compared to fancy MIG or TIG welding.
Here's the lowdown in a nutshell:
It ain't gonna win any beauty contests, but for simple fixes, it might just be the bee's knees!
Here's the lowdown in a nutshell:
- Why Bother? Sometimes you just need a quick, cheap aluminum fix, and stick welding might just scratch that itch.
- Lack of Info: I noticed most online stuff about this was thin on the ground, especially when it came to seeing actual results and knowing the nitty-gritty.
- Does It Work? Surprisingly, yeah. sometimes it was a train wreck, other times it was not half bad.
- Dirt Cheap: A pack of aluminum stick electrodes cost me not more than $9 on sale – you can't beat that with a stick!
- Rocky Start: My first welds were rough around the edges, probably bcs I didn't clean the metal or preheat. The slag was a real bear to get off, needing a vibrating tool!
- Prepping Helps (A Bit): Cleaning the aluminum and preheating it made things a little better, but the weld got super wide and out of hand.
- Arcing Around: Keeping the arc going was a pain in the neck, had to practically touch the metal with the rod. If it went out, you were in a pickle.
- Bigger Gun, Better Results: Switching to a beefier welder with more juice made things way easier to control.
- Hot Water Hack: I found a game changer for removing that stubborn slag, which is hot running water and a toothbrush! Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
- Speed Matters: Welding faster with more amps seemed to be the sweet spot for decent welds on thin aluminum. Going slow meant a total meltdown.
- Practice Makes Perfect: I admit tht my technique was a bit inconsistent, but reckon with more practice, I could get it down pat.
- My takeaway? If I can do it, I bet my bottom dollar you can too! Just grab some cheap rods and give it a shot.
