Stick welder recos

Trying to decide on a stick welder to add to my little garage setup. It doesn't have to be crazy industrial, just something reliable for general repair jobs, farm gear, and the odd fabrication project when inspiration hits me. Portability matters a bit since I'll be moving it around, but I don't want to sacrifice too much on duty cycle or power either.
So on research, I've been eyeing some of the smaller inverter machines since they're lightweight and seem to run smoother arcs compared to the old buzz boxes. But part of me likes the idea of a tough old transformer unit that can take a beating and keep sparking lol. I think I'm just a lil confused and I'd appreciate any help
 
Choosing between these 2 types of welders is a decision every beginner faces. The old transformer buzz boxes are tough and nearly impossible to break but they're heavy and the arc on AC-only models can be hard to control. For most modern garage shops, a DC inverter welder is usually the better choice. The arc is smoother, making it easier to learn and the machines are significantly lighter. Being able to use a low-hydrogen rod like a 7018 is also a big plus for strong repairs on farm equipment.

What kind of electrical setup do you have in your shop? Are you working with 120V or do you have access to a 240V outlet?
 
Transformers are tougher and take abuse better, but they're heavy and less refined but for a garage setup, a 150 to 180A inverter with a good duty cycle should cover repairs and light works on it without issue

@_g33km3ist3r I've got 240V in the garage already, ran it a few years back when I put in the air compressor. So that opens up my options pretty well and the portability of the inverter is appealing since I sometimes need to drag equipment outside to work on it
So if I go the inverter route, what amperage range should I be looking at for general farm repair work?
