The idea is to get a reliable unit that can handle both small fabrication projects and occasional thicker plate work without feeling underpowered, I’m not locked into a specific brand or model yet so I'm still weighing options between inverter style machines, built in compressors vs. external air, and whether to go for something more budget friendly or invest in a long haul unit right away

From what I’ve seen in shops and videos, it’s better to get something a little stronger than what you think you need. The guys I know who bought budget cutters usually end up upgrading once they try cutting 1/2-inch steel. Everlast and Hypertherm come up a lot as solid choices. I’m leaning toward something inverter-based just to save on weight and space.

yep, agree with the comment above. you will always regret buying the minimum thickness cutter. If you want to cut a 1/2inch plate regularly, you need a machine rated for a 5/8 or 3/4inch severance cut.

If you can swing it, go Hypertherm Powermax. Their consumables last longer and the quality of the cut is night and day. It's more money upfront, but the lower cost of consumables and better cut quality make it cheaper in the long run

For what you’re describing, an inverter style multiprocess welder is usually the best cos its light, efficient, and can handle small fab work plus occasional thicker plate. Whether you go built in compressor or external air depends on how mobile you need to be, but investing in a solid unit upfront usually pays off in the long run
