are all these welder settings are necessary?

I finally decided to buy one of my dream welders! It's a gasless Cosmo 130 amp and a flux wire. I tried using metal scraps, and boy, it's harder than it looks haha. The in max min is 4mm, and the max max med is 5mm welding. Is it odd and do I need all of these settings? Should I clean the metals first before welding?

I guess just like in everything else, practice makes you better each moment. So go, just do what you gotta do til everything goes smooth without you noticing. Try every setting and learn, experience is the best teacher. One tip though, the the cleaner the stuff you want to weld the better.

I guess so. It used to be so fun, but now it feels like a chore haha. I'm assuming that it'll be more fun after I get the hang of it

Hey, congrats on snagging the Cosmo 130A! The 4mm-5mm settings are pretty much the norm for flux core welders, so you're all set there. When it comes to cleaning the metal, absolutely make sure to do that first. Any dirt, rust, or oil can realy mess up your welds, so a quick run with a wire brush or grinder will do wondres. Just keep practicing,and you'll get the hang of it in no time

They are right! The numbers are within the normal range for a small flux core welder. You will likely find that the lower settings work better for thin material while the higher ones help with thicker stock. Small DIYs can help you improve your skills. Just do not rush every step if you want to have the best results for your work.
