ER70S-6 advice

A friend told me about this welding wire, and it sounds like a solid choice for welding on surfaces that aren't in perfect condition. I'm considering using it for mild steel projects here in Montana but wonder if it's easy to find locally or if online ordering is the way to go. Has anyone here used it and can share recommendations?

Used it here in Montana like conditions, great for mild steel and rough surfaces. Local farm or welding stores might have it, but online's often cheaper if you're not in a rush. Just match spool size to your welder.

You're talking about flux-core wire am I right? Are you planning to buy retail or bulk? Pretty sure Amazon has got it. You can try Hobart, Lincoln, and Forney for it.

Good to know local stores might carry it but online savings do sound tempting. What spool size worked best for you in those conditions?

honestly, you can get it in a lot of places. but no matter where you buy it, make sure you're using DC electrode negative (DCEN) / straight polarity on your welder with self-shielded flux core for optimal results!

That's a good tip on polarity, I'll keep that in my back pocket. I think we got our wires crossed though, the ER70S-6 I'm asking about is a solid MIG wire that I plan to run with shielding gas. My understanding is that it runs on DCEP, is that correct?
 
ER70S-6 works really well on regular steel that's got a bit of rust or mill scale. You can find it pretty much anywhere, most local places have it, but the internet's good if you need a lot or want a better price

I'm just now seeing your reply and it's good to have another confirmation on this wire.

The general consensus that it performs well on steel with some mill scale is what prompted me to try it out. Based on the earlier advice, I did order an 11 lb spool a couple months back and have been running it since. It truly does wet out nicely and produces a very clean bead even when my metal prep isn't absolutely perfect. Have you found any benefit to running a higher percentage of CO2 with this wire, or is a standard 75/25 Argon CO2 mix the best for it?
