SMAW electrodes and annealing reco's for better machinability

Machining welds have got to be one of the most fascinating aspects of working with metals. Every time I dive into this kind of project cant help but get excited about how filler materials react differently after welding. Has anyone found that one SMAW electrode stands out for machining ease, for example is 6013 a friendlier option for cutting tools than 7018? It would be great to hear your experiences with this.

What do you think about annealing to improve machinability? Ive read that it can help soften the material but Ive never tried it. Be glad to hear tips or advice for balancing weld repair with smooth machining results. Lets keep this exciting conversation going.

Hmm. I think you may need more info on what you're doing. Stick welding is unusual for precision machining jobs because it's just very hard to control and may leave you with slag. Stick is rather for heavy duty repairs like cast iron blocks. If you're looking into smaller jobs then MIG, TIG, or spray may be good options. Just research more on what's the most fitting.

Appreciate the reply! True that stick welding can leave more slag which might complicate machining but it shines for heavy duty repairs like cast iron. Have you found MIG or TIG better for precision work in your projects or do you still use stick for specific tasks? about the SMAW, I've definitely heard that 6013 can be a bit more forgiving on tooling compared to the tougher 7018 deposits. Anyone else find that to be true?
 
6013 surely runs smoother and lays down without much fuss. Back when I was working on farm equipment repairs, it was my go to for quick jobs where appearance mattered more than deep penetration. 7018 grips like a bulldog but demands prepped surfaces and a steady hand. @StillAlive

I completely agree,E6013 rods are generally easier to machine compared to 7018 because they're softer and produce smoother slag. Annealing can definitley help by softening the metal, which makes cutting easier, but it does come with a downside of reduced strength, so it's all about finding that balance. Striking the right chord between weld strenght and machinability is crucial
 
Looks like 6013 has earned a reputation for being friendlier on tooling, and I can see why. It lays down smooth and doesn't fight back in machining.
