stainless stick welding

im gonna start stainless stick welding at work or school soon. ive never done it before. i struggled a bit with tig stainless. what should i expect thats different from regular smaw. how will handling the material change besides using a stainless brush.

from my experience with stainless stick welding for some projects it can actually be quite smooth, almost like running 6013 or even 7014. The biggest thing ive learned is that trapping slag is a real risk if your arc is too long or youre moving too fast. a tight arc is key and i find a medium drag angle, along with slightly positioning the joint uphill really helps avoid that slag getting stuck inside. Once you dial in the right current you can practically drag the tip of the electrode right along the joint

stainless stick welding is messier than tig, mainly because of slag. You'll need to chip it off between passes and clean the material well before welding, heat control is also important to avoid warping. anyway, if its any compensation, it's a bit more forgiving than tig once you get the hang of it, just practice and adjust as needed.
