multiple passes or bigger power source?

I've got a setup question: can you realistically weld 3/8" steel plate with just 110v, 40 amp service and an inverter stick welder? I'm assuming I'd need to bevel the edges and run multiple passes, but I'm wondering if anyone here has actually done it. If I wanted to do it in a single pass, what kind of power are we really talking about? Is it possible at home on limited power, or is that just out of reach without going 220/240?
 
You can weld 3/8" steel on 110 V with proper beveling and multiple passes, but a single pass full penetration weld is basically out of reach, you'd need 220/240 V or a big MIG/TIG setup. Stick welding multiple passes at home will work fine if you take your time
